Tsunami 1;
First the earthquake: 9 on the Richter scale.
Detected at midnight GMT
Saturday by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA).
Order given to evacuate the U.S. Naval Station
at Diego Garcia, due to
a probable tsunami. Information is not passed
on to governments of the
region.
Then the tsunami: Wave after wave, 10m's high,
come crashing on to the
beaches. 140,000 dead. "One of the major natural
disasters in world
history." said Bush [1]. "Unprecedented international
effort needed
declared" Kofi Annan, "Together, we have the
power to stop those next
waves," [2]. "[I am] shocked [by the devastation]"
said Kofi Annan [3].
"I have never seen anything like this," Powell
declared [2].
Victims were burnt on the beaches to avoid the
spread of disease. Mass
graves had to be dug. "It's just beyond our comprehension
to think about
how many lives have been lost," said Bush in
awe [1].
Tsunami 2;
First the earthquake: Unable to get UN approval,
the US shook the
foundations of the UN and international community
by announcing that
it would go to war with Iraq alone, not quite
alone, but with a coalition
of the opportunists. "Sometimes unilateral action
may be called for" said
Kofi Annan. "Let's go" said Bush [4].
Then the tsunami: Wave after wave of American
bombers, wave after wave
of American missiles, came crashing into a beleaguered
Iraq. In a few
days more explosive power was dropped on Iraq
than by all sides in the
2nd World War. Radioactive explosives, fragmentation
bombs, the mother
of all bombs. "Shock and awe!" said Donald Rumsfeld.
Limbs were torn
from tiny bodies. Fires burned throughout the
night. The smell of
burning flesh filled the air. Orphans were made
by the score. The first
night 10,000 lay dead. Graves for mass burials
had to be dug. "100,000
dead and probably much higher" reported Lancet
[5]. "Mission accomplished!"
announced Bush.
