Mechanical and Magnetic Properties of Materials

The mechanical properties of materials, such as elasticity, plasticity, malleability, ductility, hardness, toughness and brittleness, determine their behavior under the action of continuous or discontinuous external forces, static, dynamic or cyclicals that are exerted on them. Therefore, the study of the mechanical properties of materials is very important when choosing the material to build a certain object with technological application. Here the importance of measuring the mechanical properties of materials, something done by IFUNAM. On the other hand, phenomena associated with materials include their magnetic properties on both the nano and volumetric scales. These properties on the nanometric scale may be different from those corresponding to the volumetric scale with high technological applicability. The magnetic properties of materials can include such phenomena as diamagnetism, paramagnetism, ferromagnetism, superparamagnetism, magnetoresistance, and magnetic coercivity.

At IFUNAM, the crystallographic analysis of nanoparticles of magnetic materials and their correlation between shape, size and crystalline structure with their magnetic properties is carried out.
